Message from Co-chairs of the
ISEC 2009 Organizing Committee

It gives us great pleasure to co-organize with the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) our second international science education conference at the National Institute of Education (NIE).  The three years since it was last hosted here have seen events such as the threat of global warming and the sharp declines in biodiversity that make our tasks as science educators even more urgent.  These wide-ranging and complex issues have created heavy burdens to deliver both a rigorous and sound curriculum in science with equal attention paid to our responsibility to our planet.  While these problems were not absent in earlier decades, they have burst to the forefront recently and demand a knowledgeable response from young people, an area which science educators can contribute.  This year will also be especially memorable not just because of a stellar line-up of international speakers but more so as the conference celebrates our re-entry into the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  We are hopeful that this will create synergy with like-minded colleagues everywhere in providing an education in science that we can be proud of for generations to come.
